Brewing news Asia: Asia Pacific Breweries heads race for Foster's

Asia Pacific Breweries is emerging as the frontrunner in the race for Foster's brewing operations in Asia after outbidding SABMiller, according to data provided on April the 30th, 2006 by The British Business Telegraph.

The operations, which include one plant in China, another in India and two in Vietnam, are expected to fetch in the region of $A200m.

Scottish & Newcastle was thought to be pursuing the Asian operations, but the UK brewer has indicated that it is unwilling to enter an auction after purchasing ownership of the Foster's brand in Europe.

Whoever purchases the Asian operations will brew, pack and market the brand under licence from Foster's.

"We are committed to growing our brand in Asia in the best way possible," said Foster's in Melbourne. "Any further licensing agreements reached would be very different from that agreed with Scottish & Newcastle as those terms were negotiated over a decade ago when Foster's was in a difficult position."

APB already brews Tiger Beer and Heineken and has brewing operations throughout the Asia-Pacific region. It is believed to be in a strong position to add good value to the Foster's brand in Asia.
